Job Description

NAES Corporation is seeking an Environmental, Health & Safety (EH&S) Intern for its Chalk Point Generating Station in Aquasco, MD. The intern will support the EH&S team in maintaining environmental compliance and safety programs, conduct inspections, assist in incident investigations, and help with training initiatives. This hands-on internship offers experience in a fast-paced industrial environment focused on regulatory compliance and safety culture within a power generation facility.
Chalk Point Generating Station, situated in Aquasco, Maryland, is a key power generation facility with a total capacity of approximately 1,618 MW. The station features a diverse lineup of nine generating units, including seven gas turbines and two steam turbines. This strategic configuration enhances efficiency and reliability, ensuring the station effectively meets regional energy demands.


Opportunity Summary


The Environmental, Health & Safety (EH&S) Intern will support the EH&S team at a power generation facility in implementing and maintaining environmental compliance, occupational health, and safety programs. This internship provides hands-on experience in a fast-paced industrial environment, offering exposure to regulatory compliance, risk assessment, incident investigation, and safety culture initiatives within a power plant setting.


Key Responsibilities


Environmental Compliance Support




Assist with monitoring and documenting air emissions, water discharges, and waste management activities.



Support compliance efforts with regulatory agencies, including the Environmental Protection Agency and applicable state environmental departments.



Help prepare environmental reports and maintain required permits and compliance records.



Participate in environmental inspections and audits.



Health & Safety Programs




Assist in conducting Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs) and risk assessments.



Support compliance with regulations from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).



Participate in safety audits, facility walkthroughs, and personal protective equipment (PPE) assessments.



Help track safety training records and maintain environmental, health, and safety (EH&S) documentation



Incident Investigation & Reporting




Assist in investigating workplace incidents, near-miss events, and unsafe conditions.



Help collect data, conduct root cause analyses (RCA), and recommend corrective actions.



Support the documentation and follow-up of corrective and preventive actions.



Training & Safety Culture




Assist in developing and delivering safety training materials and toolbox talks.



Support employee engagement initiatives that promote a strong safety culture.



Participate in emergency preparedness drills and response planning activities.



Data Analysis & Reporting




Compile and analyze environmental, health, and safety (EH&S) performance metrics (e.g., TRIR, near-miss trends, environmental exceedances).



Support the preparation of monthly and annual EH&S reports.



Assist with maintaining compliance tracking systems and digital recordkeeping processes.



Physical Requirements and Working Conditions


Physical requirements include standing for extended periods of time, stair and ladder climbing and routinely lifting up to 50 pounds. Protective equipment must be worn in the performance of some duties (e.g. hard hats, safety glasses, air masks, ear protection, chemical suits, hot gloves and high voltage protective equipment, etc.). Work with hazardous materials may be required.


Fitness for Duty


All employees will participate in the Fitness for Duty Program. This program includes a post-offer physical examination and drug screening and post-employment random drug screening. There are extensive smoking restrictions in and around the facility.


Work Schedule


Standard work schedule is Monday through Friday, eight-hour shifts.


Duration


This is a full-time internship position for the duration of the summer, with flexible start and end dates based on the candidate’s availability.


Compensation


The hourly rate of pay will be $25.00 per hour.


Education and Experience


We are accepting applications from students currently pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Environmental Science, Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Engineering, Industrial Hygiene, or a related field. A strong academic focus in environmental compliance, workplace safety, regulatory standards, and risk management principles is preferred.



Previous internship experience or relevant coursework related to environmental, health, and safety (EHS) or industrial operations.
Familiarity with ISO 14001 and/or ISO 45001 management systems.
Demonstrated interest in pursuing professional certifications such as Associate Safety Professional (ASP), Certified Safety Professional (CSP), or Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM).

Strong interest in industrial safety and environmental compliance.



Basic knowledge of OSHA and environmental regulations.



Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.



Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.



Ability to work in an industrial environment, including climbing stairs and wearing required personal protective equipment (PPE).


Must possess a valid drivers' license and successfully complete a background check, pre-employment physical and drug screen
