Job Description
DCO Energy, LLC is seeking an Instrument and Electrical Technician in Providence, RI. The role involves calibrating, troubleshooting, and maintaining plant instrumentation and electrical systems for a cogeneration facility. Responsibilities include ensuring safety compliance, performing routine maintenance, diagnosing system faults, and supporting operations. The technician will work under the Operations Manager and coordinate with maintenance personnel to ensure reliable facility operation.
SUMMARY
Responsible for the calibration, troubleshooting, maintenance, and repair of plant instrumentation, controls, and electrical systems to support the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of the cogeneration facility. Works under the direction of the Operations Manager and in coordination with Operations and Maintenance personnel. Strictly adheres to all safety and environmental rules and regulations to protect employees, the public, and facility assets.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Includes the following. Other duties may be assigned as needed.
· Maintain, troubleshoot, calibrate, and repair plant instrumentation, control systems, and electrical equipment, including but not limited to:
o PLCs, DCS/SCADA systems, HMIs
o Transmitters (pressure, temperature, flow, level)
o Control valves, actuators, VFDs
o Motor control centers (MCCs), switchgear, relays, sensors, and analyzers
· Safely operate, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair low-voltage and higher-voltage electrical systems, including control power circuits, motor power circuits, panels, and distribution equipment, in accordance with facility procedures and applicable electrical codes.
· Perform work on electrical systems in compliance with lockout/tagout (LOTO), arc-flash, and electrical safety requirements, ensuring proper isolation, verification of de-energization, and use of required personal protective equipment (PPE).
· Inspect, test, and maintain electrical components such as breakers, relays, contactors, transformers, power supplies, and grounding systems to ensure reliable and safe operation.
· Assist with electrical switching activities, equipment energization/de-energization, and verification testing under the direction of plant supervision and in coordination with Operations.
· Perform routine and corrective maintenance on I&E systems to ensure accuracy, reliability, and compliance with operational and regulatory requirements.
· Support remote operation and monitoring from the control room by ensuring instrumentation and control systems function properly and provide accurate data.
· Diagnose control system faults, signal issues, power distribution problems, and communication failures; implement permanent corrective actions.
· Read and interpret P&IDs, loop diagrams, wiring schematics, logic diagrams, and equipment manuals to safely execute work.
· Calibrate instruments and verify loop integrity in accordance with manufacturer specifications, plant procedures, and applicable standards.
· Assist Operations in equipment startups, shutdowns, trips, and outages by providing technical support for control and electrical systems.
· Record calibration data, maintenance activities, and system changes; analyze trends to identify developing issues.
· Write and submit corrective and preventative maintenance work orders using the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
· Support water treatment and emissions monitoring systems by maintaining associated instrumentation and analyzers, as applicable.
· Participate in plant testing, commissioning, and system modifications, including logic changes and control system updates (as authorized).
· Perform duties as outlined for assigned Collateral Duties.
· Support the Lead Engineer during underground utility, vault, and manhole inspections, including confined-space entry preparation, equipment checks, and field observations.
· Assist with inspection, troubleshooting, and maintenance activities in campus mechanical rooms, including pumps, heat exchangers, valves, piping, and related support equipment.
· Read, understand, and comply with all facility safety, environmental, and regulatory procedures.
· Cooperate with and participate as an effective team member across Operations and Maintenance.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
· Minimum 2-4 years’ experience in operations & maintenance-related field.
· High School diploma required.
· An associate’s degree or technical diploma in Instrumentation & Controls, Electrical Technology, Industrial Electronics, Mechatronics, or Power Plant Technology is required, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant hands-on experience.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
Demonstrated knowledge of all facets of power plant operations. Demonstrated ability to make competent decisions in emergency situations, write operating procedures, and train other personnel. Demonstrate good verbal and written communication skills. Ability to do reaching, climbing, lifting (up to 75 pounds), walking, and stooping.
