CEMML applies the latest and most appropriate science to promote the sustainable management of natural and cultural resources on Department of Defense and other public lands. This position is located at Pohakuloa Training Area on the Big Island in Hawaii. The work site is located about 45 minutes from Hilo and Kona. The terrain is very rugged, consisting of extensive lava flows intermixed with vegetated areas. The elevation is about 7,000 feet and the climate is relatively cool and varies from wet to dry.The technician supports activities to manage invasive species and monitor native Hawaiian species. Management includes using lethal and non-lethal means to control small mammals, feral ungulates, invertebrates (e.g., aphid, ant), and non-native-vegetation. The technician inspects fence lines/gates and performs repairs. The technician assists with monitoring native bird and bat species including deploying and retrieving electronic monitoring devices and cameras. The technician collects data and provides written and oral reports. The technician primarily works as part of a field crew, but also works alone. The position is primarily field work (90%) with about 10% office time.Required Job Qualifications• High School Diploma, General Education Development (GED), or equivalent required.• Minimum of 1 year of experience in natural resource management including experience in managing invasive species in natural areas.• Experience operating and maintaining various power equipment used in vegetation control including but not limited to line trimmers, backpack sprayers, chainsaws, etc.• Demonstrated experience working in remote field locations; ability to walk up to 5 miles per day in rugged terrain carrying materials and supplies under all weather conditions.• Experience driving 4-wheel drive vehicles on unimproved roads.• Working knowledge of computers and Microsoft Office Suite.• Must have a valid driver's license or the ability to obtain a driver's license by the employment start date.• The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. by proposed start date; CEMML will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.Preferred Job Qualifications• Associate or Bachelor's degree in wildlife management, zoology, conservation biology, or related field.• Experience implementing nuisance animal control using live-capture traps and lethal traps.• Experience with constructing and repairing ungulate proof fences over rough lava terrain.• Experience in welding and fence fabrication.• Knowledge of small engine and power tool repair.• Experience applying herbicides or pesticides to control nonnative invasive plants and invertebrates.• Experience working with native wildlife, including threatened and endangered species, to include surveying, monitoring, and data collection and management.• Experience collecting field data using consistent methods and entering data into databases.• Experience using a hand held GPS unit and/or a mobile data collector device to navigate in the field.• Demonstrated experience working on team.• Good oral and written communication skills.• State of Hawaii Commercial Pesticide Applicator certification for Category 2 Forest Pest Control. 5• Experience working on a military installation.Essential Duties Job Duty Category Fence Maintenance Duty/Responsibility• Assist in creating monthly field schedules for fence inspection and repairs.• Perform maintenance and repairs to fence lines and gates to prevent ungulate ingress into conservation areas.• Record data related to fence maintenance activities.• Inspect security fences for Hawaiian Hoary bat entanglements.• Review camera data and report ungulate ingress, fence line and gate damage.Percentage Of Time 25 Job Duty Category Invasive Animal Management Duty/Responsibility• Implement protocols for invasive animal management.• Ensure all required data, maps, equipment, supplies, and vehicles are available and prepared for daily field operations.• Implement best management practices in accordance with the Animal Welfare Act and CSU-approved SOPs when trapping and handling animals.• Follow all federal and state regulations on use of chemical controls including pesticides and rodenticides.• Flexible in assignments.Percentage Of Time 20 Job Duty Category Vegetation Control Duty/Responsibility• Control non-native vegetation using gas power tools (i.e., weed trimmers, chainsaws), hand clearing, and herbicide/pesticide application.• Clean, maintain, and repair equipment used for vegetation control.• Record and submit pesticide use to Environmental Compliance Officer (ECO).Percentage Of Time 20 Job Duty Category Survey and Monitor Wildlife Species Duty/Responsibility• Implement wildlife survey and monitoring protocols and Standard Operating Procedures as directed by the Supervisor.• Ensure all required data, maps, equipment, supplies, and vehicles are available and prepared for daily field operations.• Flexible in assignments as well as work schedule. Occasional overnight, early morning and weekend work required.Percentage Of Time 15 Job Duty Category Data Management, Analysis, and Reporting Duty/Responsibility• Record and enter data related to daily field activities such as management actions, herbicide use, equipment maintenance, and vehicle inspections.• Collect data on native and invasive wildlife using digital data collection devices for surveys, incidental finds, control methods, and for assessments of management sites.• Support a variety of technical writing and reporting needs.Percentage Of Time 10 Job Duty Category Project Coordination Duty/Responsibility• Participate in work related trainings and meetings with program leaders and managers.• Assist other Natural Resource programs with field work.• Maintain cleanliness of vehicles, office workspace, and base yard in accordance with the Wildlife Program standards.• Conduct inventory of supplies and equipment as scheduled or instructed.Percentage Of Time 10Application Details Special Instructions to Applicants CSU is committed to full inclusion of qualified individuals.
