About this Role
The Principal at National Grid Partners will play a crucial role in the Investments team, operating at the intersection of technology and venture capital. This position is tasked with identifying and managing investments in technology startups that align with the strategic interests of the organization. The Principal’s efforts will not only support Investment Directors in crafting and executing investment strategies but also ensure a continuous pipeline of promising startups. By performing detailed due diligence and competitive analysis, the Principal will help drive informed investment decisions. The role requires active participation in broadening National Grid Partners’ influence within the venture capital community and the energy sector. The Principal will also play a part in shaping thought leadership and reputation building by engaging in industry events and networking extensively.
Responsibilities
• Help Investment Directors complete investments that support our focus areas.
• Help Investment Directors define investment strategies.
• Build a pipeline of leading startups that fit with the strategic investment themes.
• For potential new investments, help Investment Directors develop a complete understanding of an emerging company by evaluating its market opportunity, competition, product, sales and growth, operations, financial statements and projections, management strength, equity needs, and capital structure.
• Develop market landscapes and points-of-view on emerging trends.
• Work with and support portfolio companies as required by Investment Directors.
• Network extensively with entrepreneurs, other venture capital funds, and utilities.
Requirements
• 3+ years of experience at a top-tier venture capital firm, or major corporation venture capital group, or a recent MBA from a top-tier business school.
• Solid mastery of financial modeling and analytical skills.
• Excellent communications and interpersonal skills with high risk tolerance.
• Highly developed analytical skills with the ability to define issues, collect and analyze pertinent data, identify alternative solutions, project consequences of proposed actions, draw valid conclusions, propose sound recommendations, and implement approved solutions in support of specified goals; attention to detail is critical.
• Undergraduate degree in Business, Science, or Engineering preferred. Advanced degree / MBA strongly preferred (not required).
• A strong strategic thinker, with the ability to see the big picture, but also address shorter-term more tactical issues.
• Experience in the energy or industrial sector strongly preferred (not required).
• Highly technology literate, with significant experience understanding the business and strategic implications of technology change.
