AQUALIS is seeking an In-House Counsel in Morrisville, NC, to provide legal support on employment law and human resources matters. The role involves advising on employee relations, compliance, and policy updates, as well as managing litigation and risk related to HR practices. Where do you fit in?

We are seeking an experienced In-House Attorney with strong knowledge of human resources and employment law to support the organization's legal and people-operations needs. This role partners closely with HR leadership and management to provide practical, business-focused legal guidance while mitigating risk and ensuring compliance with applicable laws and regulations.

Key Responsibilities

Employment & HR Legal Support
• Provide legal counsel on employment law matters, including hiring, discipline, performance management, terminations, and reductions in force
• Advise HR and leadership on employee relations issues, investigations, and dispute resolution
• Review and support compliance with wage and hour laws, anti-discrimination laws, workplace safety regulations, and leave requirements

Policy & Compliance
• Work with HR to draft, review, and update employee handbooks, HR policies, codes of conduct, and internal procedures
• Monitor changes in employment and labor laws and proactively advise on required updates
• Support internal audits and compliance initiatives related to HR practices

Contracts & Documentation
• Work with HR to draft, review, and negotiate employment agreements, offer letters, severance agreements, confidentiality agreements, and restrictive covenants
• Provide guidance on independent contractor classifications and workforce structuring

Litigation & Risk Management
• Manage employment-related claims, complaints, and administrative charges, including coordination with external counsel when needed
• Support responses to government agency inquiries and audits
• Identify legal risks related to people operations and recommend practical mitigation strategies

Training & Advisory
• Partner with HR to develop and deliver training for managers and employees on employment law and workplace best practices
• Serve as a trusted advisor to leadership on HR-related legal issues and strategic initiatives

Qualifications

Required
• Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school
• Active bar membership in good standing
• 3-7+ years of experience in employment law, labor law, or in-house legal roles with significant HR exposure
• Strong knowledge of employment and labor, DOT laws and HR best practices
• Ability to provide clear, practical legal advice in a fast-paced business environment

Preferred
• Prior in-house experience or close partnership with HR teams
• Experience drafting HR policies and employee handbooks
• Familiarity with multi-state or international employment issues
• Strong interpersonal skills and business judgment

Salary Range: $115,000.00 / $165,000.00 per year
