Job Description
Nelson Labs is seeking a Global Director of Environment, Health, Safety, and Security (EHSS) in Salt Lake City, UT. This role involves leading EHSS programs, ensuring regulatory compliance, and fostering a safety culture across the organization. Candidates should have a bachelor's degree in a scientific or engineering field, at least 12 years of EHS experience, and strong leadership skills. The position requires collaboration with senior leaders and managing global teams.
Position Overview: Global Director of Environment, Health, Safety, and Security (EHSS) for Nelson Laboratories, a wholly owned subsidiary of Sotera Health. The Global Director EHSS is responsible for leading, executing, and managing Nelson Labs comprehensive environmental, health, safety and security programs, ensuring compliance with all relevant regulations and consensus standards, developing and optimizing safety programs, and building and promoting a culture of safety across all geographies.
This position reports directly to the Sr. VP Environment, Health, Safety, and Security and has a dotted line to the President of Nelson Laboratories. This role has broad accountability and is highly visible. It is anticipated that this leader will serve on Sotera Health’s senior-most EHSS leadership team and the Nelson Labs senior leadership team.
Required Qualifications:
• A bachelor’s degree in a scientific or engineering discipline.
• A minimum of 12 years EHS experience required. Preference to those with CSP, CHMM, CIH, CEA, CPEA, or RBP certifications.
• A minimum of 5 years managing people and building EHS programs. Leading global, matrixed teams in regulated laboratory setting (e.g., GLP/GMP) is preferred.
• Direct experience working with and influencing senior leaders and building productive and trusting relationships with regulatory agencies.
Essential Duties:
• Leads the Nelson labs global EHSS strategy (Hoshin) and tactics to ensure compliance with federal, state, local laws, regulations, codes and consensus standards (e.g., OSHA (29CFR1910), EPA air, water, and waste rules, HazMat (49CFR), EU ATEX Directive, and EU REACH/CLP).
• Leads Nelson Safety and Security committees and drives continuous improvement throughout all levels of the organization
• Develops annual plans for improving EHSS outcomes and executes those plans with rigor and timeliness.
• Prioritizes work for self and team based on risk; makes rapid, disciplined decisions.
• Routinely coaches the team and clients on complex regulatory topics and creates shared understanding of execution requirements.
• Identifies, develops, and retains highly effective talent; coaches others to increasing levels of performance.
• Regularly evaluates own and benchmark data to identify risks and trends; develops effective, prioritized, and sustainable solutions.
• Uses advanced tools and capabilities to execute robust root cause investigations and drive systemic solutions that prevent recurrence.
• Performs periodic risk and/or self-assessments and guides site personnel through safety-walks, toolbox talks, job safety analyses, and pre-task planning.
• Anticipates controls necessary consistent with Nelson current and expanding book of work.
• Understands and employs principles of escalation and/or stop work authority to ensure a safe and healthy workplace.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills and influences using both media; simplifies complex topics to ease understanding and decision-making.
• Creates and manages the annual EHSS budget.

• Six Sigma green belt or higher
• Internation experience leading EHS programs.
Travel: Up to 20% domestic and international travel may be required, including overnights.
Work Environment:
• This job operates in both a scientific laboratory setting and office setting
• The successful candidate must be able to use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) (e.g., respirator, coveralls, lab coat, goggles, and hearing protection) that may be required when performing job duties.
• Must be able to stand and or walk for periods of up to two hours/day.
• Must be able to occasionally carry and hold items up to 40 lbs.
