Millennium Consulting Associates is seeking an Entry Level Field Environmental Technician in Los Angeles, CA. The role involves supporting Project Managers with industrial hygiene evaluations, environmental investigations, and report preparation. The position requires travel within California and involves physical demands such as lifting and working in various environments, including construction sites. Candidates should have a fundamental understanding of environmental and industrial hygiene principles.
Oakland, CA and Los Angeles, CA • Full-time • Compensation Plan
The Field Environmental Technician will perform duties under the supervision of Project Managers, project level engineers and industrial hygienists. This employee will assist in the execution of a variety of industrial hygiene (e.g., asbestos, lead, fungi, indoor air quality, chemical and physical hazards) and environmental engineering-related field investigation and monitoring tasks. Tasks can vary from day-to-day, but will include:
• Industrial Hygiene evaluations including field inspections, sampling of air/water/soil/building materials for the presence of hazardous materials, employee monitoring and workplace surveillance, abatement and construction monitoring – estimated 75-80% of overall responsibilities;
• Environmental and Geo-environmental evaluation of sites, including assisting with air/water/site permitting, hazardous materials management, assisting with design preparations including AUTOCAD site plan preparations – estimated 15-25% of overall responsibilities; and
• Preparation of Technical and General Survey Reports and Remediation Reports. Physical Requirements:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by the employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The physical requirements include:
• This position is based in the San Francisco Bay Area and Los Angeles Area. Travel within California area will be required, including overnight travel. Night, weekend and holiday work may be required.
• Standing, walking, sitting, use of hands to feel materials, reach with hands and arms, and smell. Frequently, standing and walking will be for long (i.e., >6 hours/day) periods.
• Climbing, balancing, stooping, crouching and crawling. These physical demands may be for extended periods of time (i.e., >2 hours/day).
• Using ladders, mechanical lifts and scaffolding;
• Regular lifting of up to 25 lbs. and occasional lifting of up to 50 lbs.; May be required to lift 50+ lbs.
• Specific vision requirements include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
Work Environments:
• The work environment characteristics described are representative of those an employee may encounter while performing the essential functions of this job. Typically, the work environments are encountered at construction sites, excavation sites, healthcare facilities, municipal facilities (e.g., waste water treatment plants), military sites, and commercial buildings of all types. The work environments include but are not limited to:
• Work areas requiring respiratory protection and other personal protective equipment (e.g., boots, gloves, eye/face protection, and hardhats) from dusts, fumes, mists, gases, etc.;
• Wet and humid conditions;
• Extreme cold and extreme heat conditions;
• Outside weather conditions;
• Working from heights;
• Working around moderate to loud noise levels;
• Crawl spaces and above ceiling access spaces;
• Confined spaces including permit-required confined spaces and non-permit required confined spaces; and
• Other work environments in which chemical, physical and biological hazards may reasonably be anticipated to occur.
Prerequisites :
• Experience: a) Fundamental understanding of construction practices, building and engineering technology; b) knowledge of basic chemistry, geology and mathematics; c) ability to read and interpret architectural and engineering plans. This can be met through a combination of hands-on field experience and college study.
• The ideal candidate will, at a minimum, possess an Associate’s degree in the construction technology, environmental/engineering/health sciences and 1-2 years of related experience.
• Oral Communication skills: The candidate must be able to demonstrate effective interpersonal skills as this position requires significant personal interaction in a variety of settings.
• Written Communication skills: The candidate must be able to demonstrate the ability to prepare written documents, memorandums and letter reports using MS Office.
• Computer Literacy: The ideal candidate will be able to navigate through MS Office applications, database programs, and graphics programs (e.g., AutoCAD and/or AutoCAD LT).
• Certification(s): Although not initially required, through company sponsorship, the ideal candidate will pursue professional certification in the following disciplines within 1 year of employment: State of California certifications in Asbestos and Lead-related activities.
• Personal transportation is required along with state-required insurance.
