Position Overview
The Environmental Technician II is a mid-level role responsible for performing environmental testing, monitoring, and compliance activities in support of engineering projects. Building on foundational experience, this position works with moderate independence to collect and analyze data, prepare reports, and ensure environmental standards are upheld. The technician collaborates with engineers, project managers, and regulatory agencies to provide accurate information that supports sustainable infrastructure and compliance with environmental regulations.
Responsibilities
• Conduct field sampling and testing of soil, water, air, and other materials, ensuring proper procedures and quality standards are followed.
• Perform asbestos inspections/air monitoring, soil and groundwater sampling, Phase I/Phase II Environmental Site Assessments.
• Collect field sample data, complete accurate and detailed field-testing reports and/or diagrams.
• Operate, calibrate, and maintain environmental monitoring equipment with minimal supervision.
• Compile and analyze data, preparing clear and accurate reports for use in engineering and compliance documentation.
• Assist in developing and implementing environmental management plans for projects.
• Support the preparation of environmental permits and coordinate with regulatory agencies as directed.
• Conduct routine inspections and audits, identify potential compliance issues, and recommend corrective actions.
• Mentor and provide guidance to Environmental Technician I staff in proper field and laboratory techniques.
• Stay current on relevant environmental regulations and industry practices.
• Perform other duties as assigned to support project goals and company initiatives.
Qualifications
• Associate’s degree in Environmental Science, Engineering Technology, or a related discipline required; Bachelor’s degree preferred.
• 2–4 years of experience in environmental fieldwork, laboratory testing, or compliance monitoring.
• Working knowledge of environmental regulations (EPA, OSHA, state, and local standards).
• Proficiency with environmental testing equipment, data management systems, and basic GIS software.
• Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
• Effective communication skills, with the ability to prepare reports and interact with engineers, project teams, and regulatory staff.
• Ability to work independently in field conditions and as part of a project team.
• Physical capability to perform fieldwork, including lifting equipment and working outdoors in various environments.
Preferred Qualifications
• Any valid industry certifications
Travel Requirements
• This position requires extensive travel, approximately up to 70% of the time, in support of business objectives and client engagements.
• May include up to 50% overnight travel.
• Travel may be both scheduled and on short notice, depending on project needs.
• Destinations typically include job sites, field locations, or regional offices, where work may be conducted in outdoor or operational environments.
• Adherence to all company safety protocols and use of PPE is required during travel and on-site work.

Physical Demands & Work Environment
• Work is primarily conducted outdoors with exposure to outdoor conditions, including:
• Sites that may not be accessible by vehicle, requiring travel on foot through wetlands, swamps, grasslands, construction zones, and other uneven or rugged terrain with natural and man-made obstacles such as sand, brush, and debris.
• Moderate to loud noise levels due to lab equipment, field operations, and construction environments.
• Exposure to dirt, dust, chemicals, sun, heat, humidity, and varying weather conditions as part of field sample collection and testing.
• Physical requirements include:
• Ability to lift and carry between 35 and 75 lbs. over distances up to 75 feet, involving regular repetitive motion.
• Ability to stand, walk, drive, and operate laboratory and field equipment for extended periods.
• Ability to bend, twist, reach, stoop, pull, kneel, climb, balance, lift, carry, and push as required for laboratory and fieldwork.
• Ability to use your senses to see (including close, distant, and peripheral vison, depth vision, and ability to focus) smell, hear, touch (use hands to reach climb or balance, crouch, stoop, crawl, kneel and sit).
