About the position
The Environmental Scientist 1/2/3 position is part of the Surveillance Division within the Office of Environmental Compliance at the Department of Environmental Quality. This role involves performing inspections, collecting environmental samples, and conducting environmental monitoring to ensure compliance with environmental regulations. The position is designed for individuals to gain the necessary training and experience to progress within the career progression group, with responsibilities varying based on the level of the position.
Responsibilities
• Perform inspections and collect environmental samples.

• Operate ambient air and water monitoring sites.

• Conduct environmental monitoring and respond to complaints and incidents.

• Assist in the preparation and participation in inspections of facilities and sources for air, water, and waste compliance.

• Participate in special inspections or sampling projects on a statewide basis.

• Receive training appropriate to the position and gain experience in environmental data collection.

• Utilize DEQ information systems to access work assignments and facility information.
Requirements
• A baccalaureate degree in a scientific field such as environmental sciences, biology, chemistry, or engineering.

• Basic knowledge of computers and ability to learn DEQ information systems.
,
• Completion of safety water vessel training, defensive driving, and HAZWOPER training.
Nice-to-haves
• A master's degree or Ph.D. in a qualifying scientific field.
