Job Description
DelDOT is hiring an Environmental Scientist I - Fisheries in Dover, DE. The role involves conducting fisheries research, including habitat surveys for horseshoe crabs and shorebirds. Responsibilities include field studies, data collection, statistical analysis, and technical report writing. Position: Environmental Scientist I- Fisheries
Introduction
The DNREC Fisheries Section works to enhance and protect Delaware’s fish and aquatic resources in support of recreational and commercial fishing and aquaculture. It provides first-class fishing and boating access to Delaware’s many waterways. This Section conducts fisheries research, resource monitoring, and collection of biological information on marine and freshwater fisheries. for more information about Division of Fish & Wildlife.
Summary Statement
The primary function of this position is to assist with a fisheries research survey “Characterizing the suitability of salt marsh habitat for spawning horseshoe crabs, Limulus polyphemus, and foraging shorebirds, including the rufa red knot, Calidris cannutus rufa.” Work will be conducted in the Delaware Estuary creeks, tributaries, and marshes. The position involves all aspects of surveying, including, but not limited to, launching and trailering boats;
setting out, using, and bringing in sampling equipment on boats; collecting environmental data (water and soil temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, soil hardness); soil sampling including organizing, storing, and mailing samples for further analysis; determining presence/absence of HSC eggs; setting and monitoring wildlife cameras. The position will assist in the maintenance of the Division’s research vessels, sampling equipment, data, and records.
Essential Functions
• Conducts field studies or inspections and evaluations for compliance with permit and regulatory requirements; observes, collects, analyzes, reviews and interprets data from standard field studies, compliance inspections, various regulatory submissions or literature and makes recommendations.
• Performs statistical analysis of data.
• Conducts technical reviews and makes recommendations on permit applications or other various regulatory submissions to ensure compliance with regulations.
• Prepares permits, technical reports and/or enforcement case documents.
• Responds to technical/regulatory inquiries from other state, local and federal agencies as well as public and private organizations or individuals.
Job Requirements
JOB REQUIREMENTS for Environmental Scientist I Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:
• Possession of a Bachelor’s degree or higher in Life, Physical, or Applied Science or related field.
• Knowledge of controlled sampling, monitoring, and testing techniques.
• Knowledge of analyzing and evaluating data.
• Knowledge of technical report writing.
• Knowledge of using an automated information system to enter, update, modify, delete, retrieve/inquire and report on data.
Additional Posting Information
This is a Casual/Seasonal position which is a non-pension eligible position without healthcare and/or other benefits.
