Barr Engineering is hiring an Environmental Field Technician - Entry Level for its Salt Lake City office. The role involves collecting environmental samples, overseeing contractors, and conducting surveys, with a mix of fieldwork and desktop tasks including GIS. The job requires an associates degree in environmental science, mechanical aptitude, and the ability to travel. A hybrid work arrangement is possible, allowing work from home part-time.
Job Description:
Summary:
Barr is seeking an environmental field technician to join its Salt Lake City office. This person may work independently or as part of a project team to collect groundwater, soil, surface water and sediment samples for field screening and laboratory analysis; direct excavation activities; and conduct surveys. Work may also include oversight of contractors and documentation of construction work. Fieldwork opportunities for this position will be year-round and will include out-of-town travel. Desktop work may include GIS tasks (map and figure creation), preparation of drilling logs, and assisting with technical reports. Project and fieldwork needs will vary seasonally and over time.
Minimum Qualifications:
• Associates or technical degree in environmental science or related field
• Demonstrated mechanical aptitude
• Demonstrated track record of performing work safely
• Ability to lift and carry equipment weighing approximately 50 pounds
• Ability to identify and independently carry out tasks needing completion
• Strong problem-solving skills, putting forth effort to meet client needs despite obstacles
• Strong attention to detail and the ability to stay well-organized
• Willingness to travel and periodically adjust personal schedule to meet project needs (approximately 25% travel and 75% fieldwork expected)
• Legal authorization to work in the U.S. without the need for sponsorship from Barr, now or in the future
• Possession of a valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record
Preferred Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree in environmental science or related field
• Previous experience working with contractors
• Previous experience collecting environmental quality samples
• Interest and experience working with GIS software’s for map creation, spatial data analysis, and data management
A hybrid work arrangement may be considered for this position. A hybrid work arrangement refers to splitting time worked between a Barr office and a home office. This position is based out of Barr's Salt Lake City, Utah, office.
Compensation:
The anticipated base hourly range for this position is $24–$29/hour. This position is classified as non-exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). Compensation will vary based on relevant experience, education, skill level, and other compensable factors. Employees in this position may also be eligible for a discretionary cash bonus based on team and individual performance. Barr has a “no retained earnings” model and distributes all its profit to our employees through our bonus plan and ESOP.

NOTE: Applicants must be able to work in locations that feature rough terrain typical of construction sites and to enter and work in facilities that include limited accessibility, moving machinery, and other conditions typical of industrial facilities.
