Position Highlights
Future Grid and Modernization has a challenging opportunity for an Engineer to join the team based at BC Hydro's
Edmonds office in Burnaby, BC.

The Future Grid and Modernization team is championing innovations in power grid technology and supporting energy
transition of our customers, with a focus on integrating new and exciting solutions. We are dedicated to advancing Battery
Energy Storage Systems (BESS) to store and efficiently manage energy and capacity, deploying Advanced Distribution
Management Systems (ADMS) for real-time grid monitoring and control and piloting and advancing other technologies for
power system.

What you'll do

Reporting to the Engineering Team Lead, this is a challenging and exciting opportunity for a Engineer to join a team of
professionals focused on mapping out BC Hydro’s Future Grid, Electrification, and to align with and operationalize CleanBC.

Specific duties:
• Participate in Future Grid collaboration meetings, data gathering, preparing strategy elements of the Future Grid roadmap.

Synthesize future grid strategy elements from internal stakeholders, and external research.
• Lead and implement Future Grid research and development, pilots, and trials.
• Draft Future Grid Topical White Papers for inclusion in overall strategy documents and roadmap.
• Asset management tasks such as: performs life-cycle analysis and reliability assessment, business case initiation for new

distribution automation assets, Battery energy storage systems, electric vehicle charging infrastructure etc.
• Conducts and supports power system impact studies with BESS and writes reports, contributes to BESS engineering

scope development.
• Coordinates, initiates and collaborates in the development of short and long term distribution substation peak load forecast

and distribution and integrated area capacity planning
• Collaborate with internal and external experts and stakeholders to gather information regarding BC Hydro T&D systems’

vulnerability to hazards due to climate change.
• Evaluate potential adaptation of new or changes in the existing distribution automation portfolio (e.g. end to end processes

from vision through evaluation to implementation, including risk assessment and risk mitigation, evaluation of the existing
commissioning and other processes).
• Collaborates with Transmission and Distribution Planning, Engineering, Field Operations, Project Delivery and

Transmission and Distribution system Operations to develop optimized plans, implement the BESS and DA projects and
support the system operation.
• Makes contribution to the yearly capital plan process, Integrated Resource Plans and Revenue Requirements Application
• Other duties as required.

What you bring
• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering recognized by EGBC and/or Canadian Universities. Consideration may be

given to other recognized and accredited degrees (such as Integrated Engineering, Engineering in Smart Grid Systems and
Technologies, etc.) with a demonstrable focus in Electrical Engineering subjects
• Minimum of four (4) years of experience in a relevant field ideally in an electricity utility. Applicants who do not meet the

full qualifications or those with lesser work experience may be considered for a lower-level position.
• Registered, or eligible for immediate registration, as a Professional Engineer with Engineers and Geoscientists of BC

(EGBC).
• Ongoing development such as self-study, attendance at technical and administrative courses and participation in technical

and professional societies.

Knowledge & Understanding, business acumen, relationship:
• Climate change science and climate resiliency methodologies in the utility space.
• Distribution Automation, its integration and impact on distribution system.
• Advanced Distribution Management System, Outage Management System and other Operational Technologies used to

operate a modern distribution system.
• BC Hydro transmission and distribution design and construction standards, specifications and materials.
• The ability to perform technical research and provide reliable advice regarding future grid, grid modernization, electric

vehicles, and distribution automation.
• Enterprise business systems including GIS applications.
• Investment Value analysis and experience in statistical analysis techniques.
• Ability to think conceptually, anticipate and assess complex issues, and balance competing priorities to reach optimal

decisions.
• Ability to work collaboratively and cooperatively within the team and with cross functional teams.
• Ability to prioritize enhancement of our customers and their experience in a rapidly evolving technology landscape.
• Ability to understand and monitor industry Future Grid trends and developments.
• Well-developed planning, organizational, project management, analytical, problem solving and decision making skills.
• Well-developed oral and written communication, presentation, facilitation, leadership, relationship management and

interpersonal skills.

• The successful candidate will be required to do occasional traveling within BC, including remote locations and sometimes

outside of the province/country.
• Must have a valid Class 5: Driver's License
