Economist - Blue-Green Finance for nature based solutions

Plymouth University is seeking a Research Fellow in Economist - Blue-Green Finance for nature-based solutions. Description:Exciting opportunity to grow and apply cutting edge, interdisciplinary research into green-blue finance for marine nature-based solutions as a key appointment in development of the University of Plymouth’s new Centre for Systems Thinking: Ocean, Land and Society and to advance solutions to global crises of climate change and biodiversity loss. The University of Plymouth’s Centre for Systems Thinking: Ocean, Land and Society champions a whole-system transdisciplinary approach to solutions-oriented research. It works in collaboration with the University’s strategic Institutes: the Marine Institute, the Sustainable Earth Institute, and the Plymouth Institute of Health and Care Research and across the University’s Faculties and Schools. The University of Plymouth leads and collaborates in transdisciplinary marine research across the UK and globally. It is a partner in Marine Research Plymouth with the Marine Biological Association and Plymouth Marine Laboratory, collectively they host the largest number of transdisciplinary marine researchers in any UK city and the greatest number of undergraduate and postgraduate marine students anywhere in the country. We are seeking a high-calibre Research Fellow in blue or green finance to undertake cutting edge and world-class interdisciplinary and collaborative research to support the development of sustainable blue economies that improve and sustain the marine environment and address the twin crises of climate change and biodiversity loss. You will develop theory and practice around identifying investment opportunities and risks for the finance sector of blue nature-based solutions. Working collaboratively with other experienced University academics you will consider how applications of inshore and offshore nature-based solutions can deliver environment and social benefits and meet environmental, social and governance (ESG) objectives, including how to identify and avoid greenwash solutions, and identification of plausible networks to bring investors together with marine researchers and developers for tractable steps toward net zero at the scales required for blue finance investment. You will contribute to enhancing systems thinking research culture and delivering opportunities for research growth, reputational benefit and real-world impact. We are looking for a researcher or practitioner with deep understanding of green and/or blue finance and its applications in sustainable development that includes environmental improvement in the context of addressing climate change and biodiversity loss. Your skills will be exemplified through PhD or equivalent demonstrable experience. You are expected to have experience in several of the following areas: natural capital, systems thinking, business models and risk, equity and bond financing, capital investment and return, ESG, sustainability, green-blue finance governance and equity; and their applications in developing theories and frameworks.
