Job Description

The Ecological Technician at Lake County Forest Preserve District in Antioch, IL, supports ecological conservation and restoration projects. Responsibilities include surveying invasive species, data collection using GIS, and applying habitat management techniques. The role requires physical tasks and driving to various locations. Candidates should have relevant coursework in ecology or related fields, strong communication skills, and a valid driver's license. The position offers a full-time schedule with a pay range of $18.75–$21.75 per hour.
SUMMARY

The Ecological Technician position assists with the day-to-day operation of ecological conservation, monitoring, and restoration projects and programs within the Chiwaukee Prairie-Illinois Beach Lake Plain. Performs daily surveys to identify, map, and manage populations of invasive plant species in adverse field conditions. Collects and enters data into GIS and other database software on a mobile device. Uses standard habitat management techniques, such as hand and mechanical removal and herbicide treatment through foliar spraying, hand-wicking, and basal-barking, to restore invaded areas. May assist with other ecological conservation and wildlife monitoring projects and programs. Maintains a safe, clean, and secure working environment through regular cleaning and disinfection of all workspaces, equipment, and supplies. Drives a motorized vehicle to travel to different locations. Performs tasks that will require walking, bending, stooping, standing, kneeling, climbing, reaching, and sitting. Performs heavy lifting tasks up to 50 pounds.

EXPERIENCE

Two years college level coursework in ecology, ecological restoration, plant biology (botany), forestry, or other natural resource related fields. Ability to maintain a safe work environment and adhere to biosecurity protocols and safety guidelines. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a diverse group of collaborators and partners. Ability to communicate both orally and in writing. Must possess valid motor vehicle driver's license.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

Anticipated hiring rate: $18.75.
