Job Description
The Hoosier Environmental Council is seeking a Climate and Energy Senior Advisor based in Indiana. The role involves researching and advocating for clean energy policies, building coalitions, and influencing state legislation. Candidates should have over five years of experience in energy policy and a strong understanding of renewable energy. Some travel is required, and applicants must either reside in Indiana or be willing to relocate.

Title: Climate and Energy Senior Advisor
Reports To: Executive Director
General Description
Climate and Energy Senior Advisor will be responsible for researching, advocating for, and organizing efforts to promote the uptake of abundant clean and affordable energy resources throughout Indiana’s energy supply. The position will be responsible for playing a leading role in coordinating efforts among a broad spectrum of interests to build an understanding of the advantages of affordable clean energy, building agreement on a path forward for implementation, and moving forward state, local and business policies and practices that achieve shared goals. The Climate and Energy Senior Advisor should have expert knowledge in the areas of renewable energy, battery storage, distributed energy resources (DER’s), load management and flexibility, energy efficiency and a passion for learning about and exploring solutions for reducing climate pollution.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
I. Responsible for researching and developing policy priorities around affordable clean energy.
II. Tracking and influencing state legislative efforts related to energy generation and power consumption.
III. Building powerful coalitions to advance clean, affordable energy resources for our state.
IV. Providing guidance around HEC energy priorities to the IURC through official comments, discussion, participation in working groups and support of legal action.
V. Share information and raise awareness among targeted groups and general public about the importance of affordable clean energy solutions.
VI. Help Indiana effectively utilize federally funded programs that help mitigate climate change.
VII. Work to build equity into our energy systems and infrastructure.
VIII. Participate in Indiana’s investor-owned utilities IRP process and work to advance interests in clean, affordable energy resources, DER implementation and growth, and grid modernization.
Preferred Qualifications
• Five plus years of experience with energy policy and the energy regulatory environment and or professional experience in planning for and developing clean energy projects.
• A curiosity and desire to learn about different energy resources, new technologies, and grid infrastructure.
• A thorough understanding of distributed energy resources.
• An understanding of the electric grid, interconnection issues and utility scale renewables.
• An understanding of the varying economics of energy generation resources.
• Ability to work with and understand a broad range of concerns and interests as they work to advance HEC goals related to climate and energy.
• Ability and desire to work collaboratively with HEC team members and be self-driven in an independent work environment.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills and an ability to bring diverse interests together to advance shared goals.
• Fluency with Microsoft Excel, Word and the ability to learn new software apps.

The focus on our efforts is on building both grassroots and grasstops support for our priorities. Examples include building participation in a training or webinar; encouraging broad response to a calls to action; one-on-one or small group meetings for collaboration, advocacy and/or relationship building with those outside of HEC; building participation with volunteer opportunities provided by HEC; supporting fundraising campaigns and/or grant submissions; and general awareness raising of HEC and our issues.
2. Continual Growth and Learning - All HEC staff are expected to continually build their knowledge base and share and utilize it strategically to advance program goals. Examples of this include increased utilization of provided tools such as Every Action, GIS mapping, and Canva; building subject matter expertise through reading books, news stories and journals; participation in trainings and discussion with colleagues; and learning through other forms of information such as podcasts and videos. Staff are encouraged to identify and name opportunities for further learning and share related budget needs with their supervisor.
3. Staff Communication and Collaboration – Staff are expected to work collaboratively within the HEC team. This means clear communication and follow-through with team members; providing support and assistance with shared organization goals when called upon by fellow team members when appropriate; and doing your best to understand staff varied cultural backgrounds, working styles, and communication methods among team members. In addition, staff should work to share their professional preferences for communication, task sharing and collaboration, and do their best to understand and support the preferences of other team members.
Travel Requirements
• Valid driver’s license and access to reliable transportation are necessary.
• Ability to attend and participate in events, workshops, and public meetings, including occasional evenings and weekends.
