Idaho National Laboratory is seeking a Chemical Engineer for its Applied Uranium Team in Idaho Falls, ID. The role involves applying chemical engineering principles to design and maintain chemical processes, develop process controls, and conduct laboratory research. The position supports nuclear material management and includes responsibilities such as preparing process flow diagrams, ensuring compliance with standards, and participating in R&D programs. The work schedule is a 9x80 format with every other Friday off.
Idaho National Laboratory is hiring a Chemical Engineer to work on our Applied Uranium Team. Our team works a 9x80 schedule located out of our Idaho Falls facility with every other Friday off. The Applied Uranium Technologies Department is in the Nuclear Science and Technology directorate and is part of the Integrated Fuel Cycle Solutions initiative at INL. We support the safe, secure, and economic management of nuclear materials from inception to final disposition by ensuring availability of special nuclear materials and strategic isotopes, reducing proliferation risks, managing radiological waste materials and used nuclear fuels and developing research, development, and deployment test beds. We perform research from bench-scale to applied engineering demonstrations. We have many areas of research interest including flowsheet development and testing for advanced fuel cycles and critical materials recovery/separation, Off-gas capture (I and Kr/ Xe), High-assay LEU recovery from zirconium and aluminum fuels, HEU/HALEU polishing/down-blending/conversion, National security mission, and Critical and Strategic Minerals and Materials Initiative research and collaborations. Responsibilities Include: - Apply chemical engineering principles to design, test, start-up, operate, and maintain chemical processes. - Prepare process flow diagrams, heat and material balances, and determine chemical process equipment requirements. - Document design to ensure conformance with requirements and standards. - Establish testing, inspection, and quality requirements. - Ensure fabrication, construction, assembly, and procurement are done per design specifications. - Develop processes for separating components of liquids and gases or generating electrical currents using controlled chemical processes. - Develop and implement process controls and tracking mechanisms using programming. - Prepare process flow diagrams and heat/material balances. - Establish process design and operating parameters through simulations, hazards analysis, and testing. - Monitor and evaluate plant system conditions and operational performance, recommend maintenance standards, and identify vendor data and replacement parts. - Participate in system design, fabrication, and testing for research and development programs. - Perform laboratory research studies to prove new principles and concepts. - Maintain familiarity with applicable codes and standards. - Identify new research opportunities, contribute to technical teams, respond to research opportunities, and assist in securing funding for research activities.
