Job Description

The State of Wyoming is hiring a Building and Grounds Specialist in Lander, WY, responsible for maintaining the grounds, streets, and sidewalks at the Wyoming Life Resource Center. Key tasks include landscaping, operating heavy equipment, and performing construction work. Candidates should have relevant experience and knowledge of safety regulations. This position involves physical work in various conditions and requires a valid driver's license.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

This position maintains the grounds, streets, and sidewalks at Lander's Wyoming Life Resource Center (WLRC). Join our team and enjoy a career in state government! WLRC currently serves Wyoming residents in an Intermediate Care Facility (ICF) and a newly constructed Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF). We have also adopted the Green House model of care.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function which may be performed at the job level.
• Maintain grounds, streets, and sidewalks at WLRC.
• Operate backhoes, tractors, mowers, trenchers, bulldozers, sprayers, and bucket trucks. Operate powered hand tools.
• Mow, water, and fertilize lawns. Remove weeds and apply pesticides and herbicides. Plant and prune trees. Remove trees as needed.
• Perform general landscaping duties.
• Install and maintain sprinkler systems.
• Perform construction work, concrete work, carpentry, plumbing, and fencing. Remove and replace sidewalks as needed. Maintain and repair streets and parking lots.
• Prepare graves and interments and maintain the cemetery and headstones.
• Snow removal.
• Maintain irrigation ditch system. Clean ditches, monitor flows, and repair and replace headgates.

PREFERENCES:

Preference may be given to applicants with two or more years of landscaping and ground maintenance experience, including the use of equipment such as backhoes, tractors, mowers, etc.

KNOWLEDGE:
• Knowledge of safety and regulations.
• Knowledge of agency policy and procedures.
• Ability to safely operate a backhoe, bulldozer, dump trucks, tractors, mowers, sweepers, sprayers, trenchers, high lift bucket truck, chain saws, and powered hand tools.
• Ability to work independently.
• Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
• Ability to work with and around WLRC residents, including those who may display challenging behaviors.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education & Experience Substitution:
2-4 years of progressive work experience (typically in Building and Grounds) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Building and Grounds Assistant

PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:
• Exposure to hazardous materials, bodily fluids, chemicals, body parts, bio-hazards, potential explosives, and/or the elements.
• Must be able to drive vehicles and/or operate large, complex cleaning and grounds maintenance equipment.
• Ability to lift and move heavy items (requires twisting, bending, lifting, kneeling, pushing, and pulling).
• Ability to climb ladders and work on a variety of surfaces and in a variety of weather conditions.
• Must possess a valid driver's license.
• Ability to work with and around WLRC residents, including those who may display challenging behaviors.

NOTES:
• FLSA: Non-Exempt
• A background check, including the taking of fingerprints, will be completed through the Wyoming Department of Criminal Investigation, the Department of Family Services, and the FBI for every successful applicant.
• The Wyoming Life Resource Center participates in E-Verify. We will provide the Social Security Administration, and if necessary, the Department of Homeland Security, with information from each new employee's Form I-9 to confirm work authorization. Please note that we do not use this information to pre-screen job applicants.
• Pre-employment drug and alcohol testing will be conducted on safety-sensitive positions. Drug testing will be conducted on any position if reasonable suspicion exists.
