The Used Fuel Management (UFM) Department has recently re-established INL’s focus and technical leadership in the area of used fuel management and disposition and is dedicated to providing government and industry with comprehensive and innovative solutions to the challenges of used nuclear fuel management. Department researchers are leading a portfolio of projects focused on the storage, transport, and disposal of used nuclear fuel and high-level waste arising from both commercial and non-commercial nuclear reactors, including advanced reactors.

The UFM Department is searching for an Advanced Reactor Spent Fuel Analyst to provide impactful advanced reactor solutions in the areas of advanced reactor spent fuel characterization, management, and packaging.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Contributes to the development of storage, transportation, and disposition options for spent fuels from advanced and first-of-a-kind nuclear reactors.
• Contributes expertise to a broad range of spent fuel related projects, including but not limited to: DOE's National Reactor Innovation Center program, other DOE-led advanced reactor deployment programs, DOE’s Spent Fuel and Waste Disposition program, and industry/vendor collaborations. This expertise might include the areas of storage and transportation package design, licensing support, spent fuel behavior analysis, future waste form development, and alternative near-term management solutions.
• Supports the characterization and investigation of historic spent fuels for applicability to future advanced reactor spent fuel management options.
• Publish work in various customer-required reports as well as peer-reviewed journal publications.
• Involved in the preparation, peer review, and delivery of program plans, oral presentations, and other activities related to INL spent fuel programs and projects.
• Works efficiently both independently and as a member of a diverse multi-disciplinary team.
• May provide mentorship to more junior peers.

QUALIFICATIONS:
• Degree required in Nuclear Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Physics or a related field with relevant work experience as follows:
• MS plus 1-3 years relevant experience.
• PhD plus 0-2 years relevant experience.
• PhD is preferred.
• Ability to hold a “Q” clearance required.
• Willingness to work on a diverse team with a diverse background (e.g., good verbal communication, ability to work with others at different technical levels).
• Thorough understanding of advanced reactor fuel design and operational concepts is highly preferred.
• Requires in-depth knowledge of used/spent fuel generation, characterization, and modeling and analysis.
• Strong leadership skills are highly preferred.
• Understanding of spent fuel facilities and technologies is highly desirable.
• Individual direction from other team members and peers and provide feedback in a constructive manner, even under pressure and tight deadlines.
• Must be able to work in a culturally diverse environment.
